Current World Cup Holders
After the somewhat disappointing result of the European Championship 2016 in France, we have to wait and see what the German national team will bring. Joachim Löw has extended his contract as national coach (Bundestrainer) of the German team. Now he has to develop the team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
After quitting the semi-final of the European Championship against France, 56-year-old Löw announced that he would analyze the tournament with his staff and the players.

Team Expansion in 2026
The FIFA Council has decided on the provocative increase in the number of World Cup participants teams. In the 2026 World Cup tournament, 48 teams will be playing for the first time, instead of the traditional 32 teams.
This was the agreed decision of the Council of the Federation International de Football Association on Tuesday in Zurich. Instead of the eight groups with four teams each, there will be 16 teams with three teams in the preliminary round. 2018 World Cup will be held in Russia and 2022 in Qatar, the World Cup2018 will still take place with 32 teams.
The new mode provides an additional co-round of the last 32 teams. Only the respective third of the 16 preliminary round groups are leaving, after the intermediate round of the 32 remaining teams it continues as usual with the round of the last 16. Whether group matches are decided by a penalty shoot-out, FIFA President Gianni Infantino will discuss the details three years before the World Cup 2026.
The now 80 games instead of 64 games are played in – as before – 32 days, which corresponds to the depositing clubs. According to the FIFA Notice, the number of rest days per team remains the same. Furthermore, the world champion will have completed seven games at the tournament.
Why is the FIFA aiming at an increase?
As the main reason, Infantino continues without a hitch that finally more countries and regions of the world will be able to participate in this fantastic World Cup event. It is not however about the good will but also about the money. Above all the FIFA is already financed by the TV marketing rights of the World Cup. The 2014 tournament in Brazil brought the FIFA $ 2.4 billion. Knocking up World Cup with more games would increase the financial opportunities immediately. Finally, the World Association could reach an even larger audience. This means even more opportunities for sponsors.
According to Infantino, the development of the member associations is also of interest to more participants. At the 1966 World Cup there were 16 starting places, 71 nations played in the qualification. In 1990, there were 24 participants and 110 qualified teams. In the meantime, 211 countries are members of FIFA and only 32 are allowed to participate in the World Cup. Since there must be a better relationship between members and actual World Cup participants, argues Infantino.
FIFA World Cup is no doubt one of the most attention grabbing and profit generating tournament around the world that not only provide great entertainment but also so much profit and opportunities to the hosting country and the teams. The FIFA World Cup 2018 will be starting from June and people are going crazy about it and hoping to see a better tournament than the previous one organized by Brazil.
