Most Stumpings in Cricket History: Wicketkeeping Records
On this page6
MS Dhoni leads the men’s ODI stumping list with 123 and the men’s T20I list with 34. Stumpings must be separated by format: a Test record is not interchangeable with an ODI or T20I record, and a keeper’s catches are not stumpings.
Who has the most ODI stumpings?
MS Dhoni has 123 ODI stumpings, the most recorded by a wicketkeeper in men’s ODI cricket.
| Rank | Wicketkeeper | Stumpings | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | MS Dhoni, India | 123 | ODI |
| 2 | Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka | 99 | ODI |
| 3 | Romesh Kaluwitharana, Sri Lanka | 75 | ODI |
Guinness records Dhoni’s 123 stumpings and distinguishes them from his 321 ODI catches. That separation is important: total dismissals and stumpings answer different questions.
Who has the most T20I stumpings?
MS Dhoni leads men’s T20Is with 34 stumpings.
The short format creates fewer wicketkeeping chances per match, so T20I totals should not be ranked against ODI totals. Use the ESPNcricinfo format record pages for future updates.
What counts as a stumping?
A stumping is a dismissal in which the wicketkeeper legally puts down the wicket while the batter is out of ground and not attempting a run.
The MCC’s Law 39 is the controlling definition. It explains why a keeper can remove the bails after a batter advances down the pitch, but also why the dismissal cannot simply be labelled a stumping when the batter is attempting a run.
How are stumping records different from wicketkeeper dismissals?
Wicketkeeper dismissals combine catches and stumpings, while a stumping list counts only the latter.
Dhoni’s 444 ODI dismissals, for example, include 321 catches and 123 stumpings in the Guinness record’s dated snapshot. A player can therefore rank first for total dismissals without ranking first for stumpings, or vice versa.

Why should Test, ODI and T20I tables stay separate?
Each format has a different volume of matches, over limits and historical record coverage.
The Association of Cricket Statisticians’ Test table, for example, is a distinct statistical series from the ODI and T20I tables. SportsMuntra will not add the three columns together and present the result as one unqualified “world record.”
How often should the stumping table be checked?
The page should be rechecked quarterly and after major international tournaments, with the scorecard or record source saved for every material change.
Routine verification changes the data-check date, not the article’s publication date. A corrected or newly set record requires an editorial update before the draft can be released.
Frequently asked questions
Who has the most ODI stumpings?+
MS Dhoni has 123 ODI stumpings, the recognised men's ODI record.
Who has the most T20I stumpings?+
MS Dhoni leads men's T20Is with 34 stumpings.
Is a stumping the same as a run out?+
No. A stumping happens when the wicketkeeper breaks the wicket while the batter is out of the crease and not attempting a run; a run out involves a run attempt.
Do catches count in a stumping record?+
No. Stumpings are a separate dismissal category. A keeper's total dismissals combine catches and stumpings, but this page counts stumpings alone.
Why are Test and ODI stumping records separate?+
The formats have different match lengths, schedules and historical coverage, so combining them can hide the achievement in each category.
Can a stumping happen from a no-ball?+
A batter cannot normally be stumped from a no-ball, although the Laws contain specific exceptions for a batter leaving the crease and attempting a run. Check the current MCC Law before applying an edge case.
